Chapter 13: A Trip Together

It was a week after the coffee break began that we all decided to go to a temple. The boys were desperate to bribe the gods for passing them in their upcoming exam. For the first time, Mallu signalled me to be his pillion rider. Though we had gone out before, I heard him sing for the first time.

"I did not know you could sing too."

"I am a bathroom singer too. An untrained one at that."

"You really sing well. Why didn't you sing on our earlier trips."

"I had not known you then. Why don't you join me? I am pretty bad when it comes to remembering the lyrics."

Together we sang some of the songs known to us. For the first time I didn't feel the need to clutch on to the side bar and holding it tightly as if my entire life depended on it. I felt relaxed, at ease and comfortable being with him.

By the time we reached back, my heart was almost on the verge of leaving me. I was from a middle class family and had only one aim during my school and college days - getting a decent job. Besides, love for me meant a lifelong commitment and I was not willing to risk giving away my heart so easily. Therefore, I kept a check on my emotions lest they became visible.

We went back to our respective rooms. I had just closed the room behind me when my phone beeped. It was Mallu.

"Thanks a ton. I never knew you were so much fun."

       I typed back.

"Thanks to you too. Even I had loads of fun today."

       "You really sing well."

       "You too."

"Hope you are liking it here in Guwahati."

"For me it is not the place but the company that matters. I really have good company here."

"You really are good company. I am glad we started talking. Thanks to your cup of coffee."

I was too speechless to respond. My phone beeped again.

"I am really glad I met you. Good night."

       "Good night."

I must have read and re-read these messages at least twenty times. His telling me that I was good company and that he was glad to have met me made my spirits soar high in ways that cannot be explained. I felt really happy. I had a peaceful sleep that night.
